How laser eye surgery for diabetic retinopathy works

The procedure is performed in‑clinic, usually takes less than 30 minutes per eye, and is done under local anaesthetic drops for comfort. Most patients can return to light activities the same day.

Photobiomodulation for diabetic retinopathy
In addition to laser therapy, some patients may benefit from photobiomodulation, a painless, non-invasive light treatment designed to support the health of retinal cells. PBM works by using specific wavelengths of light to:
- Reduce inflammation in the retina
- Improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to the eye
- Support the metabolism of retinal cells affected by diabetes
- Help stabilise the retina alongside other treatments
The procedure is carried out in-clinic, with you simply sitting in front of a PBM device for a few minutes per session.
